GABA är en [[neurotransmittorer|neurotransmittorsubstans]] som till skillnad från [[dopamin]], [[serotonin]] och [[noradrenalin]] verkar hämmande på impulsöverföringen mellan nervceller i hjärnan. Ett överflöd av GABA ger avslappning/sedering. För låga värden av GABA leder till en överstimulering av nervsystemet och kan leda till allvarliga medicinska komplikationer. GABA äts av kroppsbyggare för att det sägs fungera bättre än kreatin för att stimulera muskeltillväxten, detta genom att stimulera utsöndringen av tillväxthormoner. GABA-receptorn tillhör precis som [[NMDA]]-receptorn de s.k jonotropiska [[receptorer]]na. Med detta menas att de reglerar en jonkanal som i detta fallet släpper förbi kloridjoner, elektriska signaler som färdas mellan mellan nervcellerna. För att släppa förbi joner så måste receptorn öppna jonkanalen. Aktiveringen sker genom att signalsubstanser (exempelvis GABA som gett den sitt namn) binder till speciella siter på receptorn.&lt;br /&gt;
